Not every experiment needs a hypothesis. The girls were talking about wanting smores a few nights back. I was looking in my pantry at a box of cereal, a bag of marshmallows, and some chocolate chips.
I wonder if this works. Can Cinnamon Toast Crunch Waffles become the next Rice Krispie Treat?
The ingredients were pantry leftovers:
- 5 cups Cinnamon Toast Crunch Waffles cereal
- ¾ stick salted butter
- 18 giant marshmallows
- 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
The butter and marshmallows went into a pot over medium-low heat. As they melted, I kept asking the only question that seems to matter when making cereal treats:
“Is there enough marshmallow?”
Right as the mixture reached that first hint of bubbling, I dumped in 4 1/2 cps of the cereal and folded everything together before the marshmallows had a chance to overcook.
Once the cereal was coated, I folded in about ¾ cup of the mini chocolate chips. Just enough heat to soften them, but not enough to turn everything into chocolate soup.
The mixture was pressed—gently—into a 13×9 pan. No compacting, nobody wants hockey pucks.
For the finish, I scattered another ¼ cup of mini chocolate chips over the top along with about ½ cup of crushed cereal for a little extra crunchy texture.
Now comes the hardest part of the experiment – waiting while it chills in the refrigerator.
Will it hold together? Will the cereal stay crisp? Will there be enough marshmallow?
I’ll know soon enough.
